5th Eko International Film Festival Call for Entry

The 5th edition of the annual Eko International Film Festival comes up November 18-23, 2014 in Lagos. The theme of this year’s edition is “NIGERIA FILM INDUSTRY AND THE MEDIA”. The President of Eko International Film Festival Mr. Hope Obioma Opara said that the festival’s focus during this edition will be on contributions of the media to the growth of the film industry. John Brown as the Mayor of the city decides to build a new dam to replace the century old dam built by his great grandfather during the colonial days in India to avoid its potential threat on 2.5million lives.
Wide protest against the evacuation costs his life. His son-in-law, acorrupt politician, becomes the next mayor and announces the inauguration of the new dam, which he has built without following the safety measures. Shankaran, an astrologer predicts about a possible disaster on the inauguration day. A group of mariners joined together by destiny decide to fight it out to avoid the disaster and save the mankind. The third Eko International Film Festival closed with an impressive audience Saturday night as Michael Oke’s white guy dating black girl love story ?Foreign Love and the world premiere of C.J. Obasi’s Jim & Joan attracted more people than the opening day as the crowd of movie lovers and others who came to the event left satisfied and commended the organizers, Supple Communications Limited.

From the inaugural edition in 2010 to the third edition, Eko International Film Festival has attracted top film-makers from the host country Nigeria, the US and Europe such as the multiple awards winning documentary film-maker and political rights activist Iara Lee, the Korean born Brazilian whose latest documentary film The Suffering Grasses on the current Syrian Crisis was seen in West Africa for the first time and rated as the best documentary feature of the film festival ahead of the multiple awards winning Project Happiness of Randy Taran and John Sorensen and other good documentaries in the official selection of the third Eko International Film Festival. The opening film Nicolas Wadimoff’s Operation Libertad was the most outstanding feature. Noel Gálvez’S Blue Sheep was rated as the most outstanding short documentary for its profound illustration of the triumph of the human spirit in spite of the challenges of survival in a hostile environment as shown in the magical story between a documentary and a fictional plot set in Villamayor de Campos in Zamora (Spain) where many neighbours are affected by Cancer, caused by an energy tower.

Niji Akanni’s Heroes & Zeroes was rated as the most outstanding Nigerian film and also the most entertaining for the audience ahead of Foreign Love by American based Nigerian filmmaker Michael Oke. CJ Obasi’s debut Jim & Joan was the most daring and scary film at the film festival with hints of Lars von Trier’s outrageous expressionism that the young Nigerian filmmaker said has influenced his themes.

What makes a successful film festival is the quality of the content and over ninety percent of the 22 films screened at the third edition of the film festival have been award winning films at other major international film festivals in Europe, US and Asia. But any film festival is not complete without film workshops and film markets for filmmakers, distributors and others and they have been missing at every edition of the Eko International Film Festival. And competitions have been excluded for now, because of lack of funds and inadequate logistics. The much publicized maiden Nollywood Divas Awards that would have been the high point of the third Eko International Film Festival was postponed until further notice, because the organizers did not receive the cooperation of the Actors Guild of Nigeria ((AGN) due to factional disagreements and petty rivalries among the members who have been boycotting the film festival after their attempts to dictate to the organizers failed.

One of the top nominees of the Nollywood Divas Awards Rita Dominic the best actress at the 2012 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) and another nominee were seen at the 2012 Kuramo Conference same Saturday night at the Conference Centre of Eko Hotel & Suites International and they wondered how the organizers could launch the awards without any formal invitation given to the 20 nominees.
“The organizers have not done the right thing, that is why we cannot attend the film festival,” said one of them.

But Mr. Hope Obioma Opara, President of Eko International Film Festival said he actually invited everyone of them through a formal official letter of invitation addressed to Ibinabo Fiberisima, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) which was the right thing to do. In fact, he also met with former president of the AGN, Ejike Asiegbu and Zik Zulu Okafor, President of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP) months ago, but internal disputes caused by different interest groups in the guilds have made him to postpone the Nollywood Divas Awards till 2013.

“We are still going to launch the maiden Nollywood Divas Awards sponsored as a separate event before the next Eko International Film Festival,” said Mr. Opara.
He thanked Heineken, Silverbird Cinemas, Silverbird TV, Galaxy TV, National Mirror, Daily Sun, The Nation, The Guardian, Entertainment Express, Daily Champion, OnoBello and others for their cooperation and support to make the third Eko International Film Festival a successful event and increasing his determination to improve the standards in the future editions regardless of the challenges.

3rd Eko International Film Festival Opens in Lagos

The 3rd Eko International Film Festival (EKOIFF) celebrating Nollywood Divas opened Monday evening at the prestigious Silverbird Galleria on Victoria Island in the coastal mega city of Lagos.
The 6 day event attracted movie buffs and the Nigerian news media with a reception sponsored by Heineken Nigeria at the atrium of the Silverbird Galleria.
The Lagos State government was represented by Mr. Wale Adeniji from the office of the Commissioner for Tourism and Inter-Government Relations. Other special guests included Mr. Fidelis Duker the Founder/CEO of Abuja International Film Festival and others from within Nigeria and abroad.

The opening film Operation Libertad was premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, directed by Swiss director Nicolas Wadimoff. There will be screenings of over 22 selected films from multiple award winning filmmakers from host country Nigeria, Spain, USA, UK, Austria, France, Argentina, Haiti and Mozambique.

The 3rd Eko International Film Festival is supported by the Silverbird Group, Heineken Nigeria, Starcom Media, Supple Communications Limited, International Digital Post Network and other partners and sponsors.

The daily festival pass in only N2, 000 per person and available at the venue.

The annual Eko International Film Festival (EKOIFF) is Nigeria’s leading international film festival in the coastal mega city of Lagos in south western Nigeria.It was founded in 2009 by Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima and Hope Obioma Opara and duly registered in the same year.

The mission of Eko International Film Festival is to promote the appreciation of Arts and Culture through the motion picture arts and sciences and boost tourism in the global village.

DAMIÁN DIONISIO (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 09/19/1982) In 2001 he entered the University of Buenos Aires in the career of Image and Sound Design. He perfected in film directing. He has made several short films in its formative stage which allowed him to acquire great experience in filming. It also operates in the area of screenplay writing as well as creative ideas and scripts for such advertising. His latest realization was the short film “The missing looks”. Today is trying to shoot his first film.

We are glad to introduce Nicolas Wadimoff, director of the Swiss film Operation Libertad the Official Opening Film of the third Eko International Film Festival from November 5-10, 2012, at the Silverbird Cinemas of the prestigious Silverbird Galleria on Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.

The following is Cineuropa‘s interview with the Genevan filmmaker Nicolas Wadimoff on Operation Libertad, his first first fiction film.

Cineuropa: Your last films were documentaries. What brought you back to fiction?

Nicolas Wadimoff: I work in an interrelated way. After two documentaries, I start to feel limited. My desire to put forward a vision, to organise it, becomes an obstacle to my love, as real as it is, for documentary. So I return to fiction. But there too, there is a pendulum effect. As soon as I feel that I am moving too far away from reality, I need to return to it, in one way or another.
Operation Libertad’s form reflects this ambivalence. It’s a fiction film that looks like a documentary.
Operation Libertad is indeed the film that most shows this tendency. When Jacob Berger and I worked on the script, we played with this ambivalence. Le film was also shot with an energy similar to that of a documentary. You can also see this in the actors’ performances. It’s almost not acting. It’s almost the actors giving the characters bodily form, rather than them playing a role.
This also allows you to distance yourself from the traditional rules for fiction…
In traditional fiction, the bar is always extremely high in terms of screenplay requirements. Yet, there is nothing worse than profiling oneself in a genre and then not being able to subscribe to it, not being able to make your own mark in it. I’m not saying that I made Operation Libertad by default because I would rather have made Usual Suspects. That’s not it. Simply, wanting to make films in Switzerland is already a strange idea, so dreaming of films with great budgets, complex plots, and tons of comedians would only mean one thing: wasting time.

So you have become more sensitive to a project’s feasibility?
Switzerland has space for many other kinds of projects. Sure, with Operation Libertad, I felt especially in tune with the context I live and make films in. It tells our country’s story. In it, we touch on bank secrecy, collusions between the Swiss financial system and dictatorships. From a purely pragmatic point of view, we knew that we could make this film here. Cast, budget, production outfit: it was all coherent with the reality of the Swiss film sector.

Let’s come back to the film’s subject. Where does it come from?
For three years, I worked on a project that was first about an alternative, then a utopia, then an insurrection. The story was set today, and I think I can safely say that I drove two screenwriters to exhaustion trying to make it work. Then, slowly, I started to think about making something in documentary form. I spoke about it to Jacob Berger, who had this idea of a guy who would film, and whose images someone would find. To make it more credible, we decided that the story would be set in the 1970s, at a time when such events could have happened.

How did you research the period?
The screenplay first and foremost comes from meetings, knowledge, and experience. Our own experiences are a little staggered in time: Jacob and I knew the Geneva squat scene very well, but at the beginning of the 1980s. I was involved in the autonomous movement, which was quite radical. In 1994, I also made a documentary for the show Temps présent (lit. “Present time”wink about the Swiss who had known Carlos. I have stayed in good terms with the film’s characters and they were a great inspiration for Operation Libertad.

Your film’s subject is not innocent. Your work is about resistance, struggle. Where does this recurrence come from?
I have never managed to detach an individual’s issues from those of the world around him. There are people — filmmakers — who do this very well. Their business is human relations, psychological or introspective dramas. But, to me, a certain social climate, social issues, are very important both in my life and in my films. How can you break away from your [social] condition? It’s probably the question I think about the most.

How did you react to your film being selected for Cannes?

I will not spoil my pleasure. For a long time, I did not give enough importance to recognition via selections and awards. It got the better of me. As I came from a very alternative, anti-media, anti-recognition, and very resistant scene, when Clandestins was released and won awards, I didn’t really know what to think about it. Today, I know that such recognition serves the film and allows you to impose even more daring topics.

The day to day of five different people reveal the complications of carrying out these evacuations, such as the day when the President and Chief of Staff are murdered and the country is paralyzed, But our protagonists teach us that in Africa easy things are difficult and the impossible becomes simple to achieve.
